Derrick Rose: 5 More Years

21 Dec 2011

As expected, the Bulls announced this morning they have scrounged up every available dollar and thrown it at hometown demigod Derrick Rose, signing him to a five-year, $94.8 million contract extension that will begin next season.

This was never not going to happen, and it is an obvious and worthy move.

As much as I think Chicago goes overboard with worshiping the guy, I do love his rare blend of head-down work ethic and roaring confidence. The latter is invaluable and not to be overlooked as we fawn over his local boy “humility.”

Sam Smith touched on it this week when a reader asked why Dwight Howard and other NBA headliners never talk about teaming up with Rose in Chicago:

As for Derrick, he doesn’t tend to strut around with these guys needing to be seen at games and events to know how important he really is. I feel he’s respected for his talent by the other players, who are a bit intimidated, in my view, that he doesn’t seem to feel he needs them.

That’s my kind of guy.
